Title: "A Longitudinal Study of Multi-Word Constructions in L2 Academic Writing"
Abstract:
This talk aims to discuss the results of a corpus-based longitudinal study of multi-word constructions (e.g., in addition to) in second language academic writing at an English-medium university, using linear mixed-effects modelling. Multi-word constructions have important functions in academic writing, and they can be indicative of language and writing proficiency. Although the use of multi-constructions has been investigated between first language and second language writing, no study has focused on the use of multi-word constructions longitudinally at an English-medium university context. The findings of the study indicated different patterns of change in the frequencies of multi-word constructions across structural and functional categories over time. I will discuss the findings from the perspective of usage-based approaches to language learning and offer pedagogical implications for teaching multi-word constructions and academic writing.
