Title: Contesting Normative Assumptions in Language Teaching
Abstract
Language teaching has long been dominated by normative assumptions surrounding which varieties of language and which groups of language users are more legitimate than others, perpetuating linguistic and racial hierarchies. However, these beliefs have long been challenged by anti-normative paradigms, especially in English language teaching, disrupting normative ideologies. Despite scholarly efforts for over 50 years, the status quo persists. One of the obstacles to transforming the status quo is a tendency to circulate critical discourses only within academic bubbles. Transforming the real world requires the enactment of criticality beyond scholarly discussions. This presentation will offer ideas for knowledge mobilization by sharing some examples of film-making for raising awareness of the global diversity of English and English users and the intersectionality of race and language in North America.

Bio-Data: Ryuko Kubota is a Professor in the Department of Language and Literacy Education at the University of British Columbia, Canada. Her research draws on critical approaches to language, culture, and education, focusing on antiracism, intersectional justice, language ideologies, and critical pedagogies. She is a coeditor of Race, culture, and identities in second language: Exploring critically engaged practice (Routledge 2009); Race, racism, and antiracism in language education (Routledge, 2025), and others. Her
publications also appear in such journals as Applied Linguistics, Critical Inquiry in Language Studies, ELT Journal, Journal of Second Language Writing, TESOL Quarterly, and World Englishes.

The impact of Internationalisation Policies in Higher Education Institutions

Enric Llurda, Universitat de Lleida (UdL)

Abstract

Many European universities have set ‘internationalisation policies’ as one of their top priorities and therefore have designed and implemented specific policies involving the three main groups of agents that form part of the academic community: students, academic and administrative staff. From the point of view of language policy, this process of internationalisation in non-English speaking universities tends to be associated with a greater presence of English. However, in bilingual communities such as Catalonia, with Catalan and Spanish as co-official languages, the introduction of English may be the source of ambiguities and tensions which are related to what can be defined as the double role of higher education institutions. On the one hand, universities aim to provide their students with the best skills to allow them to ‘compete’ for work in a global world, and English tends to figure very high in this set of skills. On the other hand, higher education institutions may be seen by society as having the mission to protect and promote the language and culture of its local environment; this is especially relevant in bilingual contexts in which there is a minority language/culture that is perceived as threatened by the dominance of the majority language/culture.
In this talk, I will cover different aspects related to such internationalisation policies that I (together with other colleagues at UdL) have been working on during the last 12 years. In particular, I will present the results obtained in 3 different studies, each looking at the following issues:
-    Linguistic, attitudinal, intercultural and identity development of study-abroad university students
-    The role of smaller languages like Catalan alongside bigger languages (Spanish and English) in internationalised contexts
-    The use of plurilingual/translanguaging models of teaching ESP

Biodata

Enric Llurda is Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Lleida. He has extensively published in international journals and books on non-native language teachers, English as a lingua franca, language attitudes, multilingualism, translanguaging, internationalisation and language education and policy in higher education institutions. He is the coordinator of the research group Cercle de Lingüística Aplicada and is currently working on the project “Development of disciplinary literacies  in English as a Lingua Franca at university”.

Title: "A Longitudinal Study of Multi-Word Constructions in L2 Academic Writing"

Abstract:

This talk aims to discuss the results of a corpus-based longitudinal study of multi-word constructions (e.g., in addition to) in second language academic writing at an English-medium university, using linear mixed-effects modelling. Multi-word constructions have important functions in academic writing, and they can be indicative of language and writing proficiency. Although the use of multi-constructions has been investigated between first language and second language writing, no study has focused on the use of multi-word constructions longitudinally at an English-medium university context. The findings of the study indicated different patterns of change in the frequencies of multi-word constructions across structural and functional categories over time. I will discuss the findings from the perspective of usage-based approaches to language learning and offer pedagogical implications for teaching multi-word constructions and academic writing.

On behalf of BUCorLing,

Prof. Dr. Leyla Martı
